All the work is entirely hand crafted by Stuart Loten. This assures continuity between the shades and bases of the lamps.

The bases are made with steel, copper brass and walnut.The major parts of the lamps are welded together rather than using nut fastening systems traditional in lighting assembly, which assures that parts won’t loosen up in time. The metals are then oxidized in an acid bath, and coated with a clear finish, producing earthy chocolate brown patinas of various hues.

The lamps feature silk shades that I hand paint with bamboo brushes and dyes. This process is called the “Serti” method in which satin silk is stretched on a frame and then painted with dyes.
